What is Dutalan and what is it used for?
The active ingredient is dutasteride. It belongs to a group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
Dutasteride is used to treat men with enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) - a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland caused by the production of too much hormone called dihydrotestosterone.
Increasing prostate size may lead to problems with urination, such as difficulty in urinating and frequent need for walking. It can also cause a delay in urine output and a weaker jet. If this condition is left untreated, there is a risk of complete blockage of the urine jet (acute urinary retention), which requires immediate medical treatment. In some cases, surgery is required to completely remove or reduce the size of the prostate gland. Dutasteride reduces the production of dihydrotestosterone, which helps reduce the prostate and relieve symptoms. This will reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgical intervention.
Dutasteride can also be used together with another medicine called tamsulosin (used to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate).
2. What do you need to know before taking Dutalan?
Do not take Dulantan:
if you are allergic to dutasteride, other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, soya, peanuts or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
if you have severe liver disease;
if you are a child or adolescent.
This medicine is for men only. It should not be taken by women, children or adolescents.
Tell your doctor if you think any of the above applies to you.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor before taking Dultan!
In several clinical trials, more patients taking dutasteride and another medicine called an alpha-blocker, such as tamsulosin, have heart failure compared with patients taking dutasteride or alpha-blocker only. Heart failure means your heart does not pump the blood to the extent necessary.
Make sure your doctor knows about your liver problems. If you have any illness affecting your liver, you may need to do some additional research while taking dutasteride.
Women, children and adolescents should not touch dasasteride punctured capsules as the active substance can be absorbed through the skin. Wash the affected area immediately with soap and water if any skin contact is present.
Use a condom during sexual intercourse. Dutasteride is found in semen of men receiving dutasteride. If your partner is pregnant or may become pregnant, it should not be in contact with your sperm as dutasteride may affect the normal development of male babies. Dutasteride has been shown to reduce the number and mobility of sperm and sperm volume. This could reduce your fertility.
Dutasteride affects blood tests PSA (prostate specific antigen), which is sometimes used to detect prostate cancer. Your doctor should be aware of this effect. However, he may appoint you this prostate cancer screening study. If you have been given a blood test for PSA, tell your doctor that you are taking dutasteride. Men taking dutasteride should check their PSA regularly.
In a clinical trial in men at increased risk of prostate cancer, men taking dutasteride had a serious form of prostate cancer more often than men who did not take dutasteride. The effect of dutasteride on this serious form of prostate cancer is unclear.
Dutasteride can cause enlargement and tension in the chest. If this becomes worrying, or if you notice lumps in the breast or the appearance of spleen secretion, you should tell your doctor about these changes, as these may be signs of a serious illness such as breast cancer.

Other Drugs and Dutalan
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
Some medicines can interact with dutasteride and increase the possibility of developing side effects. Such drugs are:
verapamil or diltiazem (for the treatment of elevated blood pressure);
ritonavir or indinavir (for the treatment of HIV infection);
itraconazole or ketoconazole (for the treatment of fungal infections);
nefazodone (antidepressant);
alpha-blockers (for the treatment of increased prostate or high blood pressure).
Tell your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines. You may need to reduce the dose of dutasteride you are taking.
Dulaned with food and beverages
Dutasteride can be taken with or without food.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
Women should not take dutasteride.
Women who are pregnant (or may become pregnant) should not come in contact with drilled capsules. Dutasteride is absorbed through the skin and can affect the normal development of male infants. The risk is particularly high during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. Contact your doctor for advice if a pregnant woman has had contact with dutasteride.

Driving and using machines
There is little chance that Dulantan will affect your ability to drive or operate machines.
Dultan contains soy lecithin.
Dultan contains soybean lecithin, which may contain soybean oil. If you are allergic to peanut or soy, do not use this medicine.
3. How to take Dutalan?
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist. If you do not take it regularly, tracking your PSA levels may be affected.
What amount to take?
The recommended dose is one capsule (0.5 mg) taken once a day. Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not chew them or open them. Contact with the contents of the capsules can cause inflammation of your mouth or throat.
Treatment with dutasteride is prolonged. Some men find a rapid improvement in symptoms. In others, however, they may need to take dutasteride for 6 months or longer before the effect of taking it. Take dutasteride for as long as your doctor tells you.
If you take more Dutalan than you should
Contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you take more than the required number of dutasteride capsules.
If you forget to take Dutalan
Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose. Just take the next dose at the scheduled time.
If you stop taking Dulantan
Do not stop taking dutasteride without first talking to your doctor. It may take up to six months or more before you can see the effect of the treatment.

4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Allergic reaction - Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms and stop taking dutasteride.
Signs of allergic reactions may include:
skin rash (which may be associated with pruritus);
hives (such as nettle rash);
swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, hands or feet.
Common side effects - may affect up to 1 in 10 men taking dutasteride:
inability to reach or maintain an erection (impotence), * this may persist after stopping taking dutasteride;
decreased sexual attraction (libido), * this may persist after stopping taking dutasteride;
difficulty in ejaculation, this may persist after stopping taking dutasteride;
enlargement or chest tension (gynecomastia);
dizziness, when taken together with tamsulosin.
Uncommon side effects - may affect up to 1 in 100 men taking dutasteride:
heart failure (the heart becomes less effective in pumping blood into the body, you may have symptoms such as shortness of breath, extreme tiredness and swelling of your ankles and feet);
loss of hair (usually on the body) or increased hair.
Adverse reactions of unknown frequency - frequency can not be estimated from the available data:
depressed mood;
pain and swelling of the testicles.
How to store Dutalan?
Store this medicine in a child-protected, light-proof place.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton or blister after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not store Dutalin above 30 ° C.
Store in the original package in order to protect from moisture.

What does Dutalan contain?
The active substance is dutasteride.
Each soft capsule contains 0.5 mg dutasteride.
The other ingredients are:
within the capsule: glycerol monocarbital (type I) and butylhydroxytoluene (E321).
capsule shell: gelatin, glycerin, titanium dioxide (E171), iron oxide yellow (E172), triglycerides (medium chain), lecithin (may contain soybean oil) (E322) and purified water.
What does Dutalan look like and what does the packaging contain?
Dulled soft capsules are 6-size, oblong, opaque, and yellow, soft gelatin capsules containing oil and yellowish liquid. Dutalan is available in packs of 10, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 90, 100 and 120 capsules. Not all pack sizes may be marketed.
The soft capsules have the following dimensions: 19 ± 0.8 mm * 6.9 ± 0.4 mm.
