Astaxanthin is a natural ingredient found in the algae Haematococcus pluvialis. This powerful antioxidant effectively protects mitochondrial membranes from oxidative stress. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid from the group consisting of (plant pigments, antioxidants). Recent studies have shown that astaxanthin greater capture free radicals, compared with beta-carotene.
Like many carotenoids, it is colorful, liporaztvorim pigment. Astaxanthin is found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crabs, crustaceans, and the feathers of some birds.
In vitro studies have shown that is ten times more powerful than other carotenoids such as lutein, zaeksantin and beta-carotene, and a hundred times more potent than alpha-tocopherol. It is also proven to prevent the oxidation of low density lipoproteins and strengthens the immune system. Unlike some carotenoids in the human body astaxanthin is not converted into vitamin A (retinol). Excessive amount of Vitamin A is toxic for human, but astaxanthin has a lower toxicity.
Natural Astaxanthin can have 550 times stronger antioxidant activity of Vitamin E and 10 times stronger antioxidant activity of beta-carotene.
