WHAT IS THE EXJADE AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR?
EXJADE contains the drug deferasirox. It is an iron-chelating agent that is used to remove excess iron from body tissues.
EXJADE is used to treat chronic iron accumulation caused by blood transfusions.
How does EXJADE work?
Patients suffering from certain types of anemia, such as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia or myelodysplastic syndromes, may require transfusion. But multiple blood transfusions can cause chronic iron accumulation. Over time, iron accumulation can damage important organs such as the liver and the heart. The organism does not have an efficient method of removing iron.
Therefore, medicines called iron-chelating agents are used to remove excess iron from the body and prevent iron-induced organ damage in iron-accumulated patients. EXJADE is associated with excess iron and forms a complex with it, which is subsequently eliminated by the stools.
